Geez, and here I thought ditching Facebook over a decade ago was my line in the sand. Guess it was only a line in the stream. Seriously creepy how far this has gone.

Juju's avatar

Same! Stopped using FB on 2012. And everyone blames me when I don’t know a baby was born, because apparently calling me was too much effort or walking across the street to tell me. Sure, it’s my fault.

That year I also ditched ALL credit cards, all loyalty or membership cards, and any digital accounts (except for my bank.) All social media accounts are incognito, with as little personal info given to create it. Some think I live in NY, others in San Diego, and others in the UK. 🤣 I stopped clipping coupons too. I reject signing up for whatever the cashier offers at checkout just to save 5% their 30% markup. I guess being willing to pay full price has actually saved me more in the long run.

Warrior Mom's avatar

apparently everyone considers FB the only way to know when someone has passed away too!! old fashioned obituaries in the nearly-dead newspapers are pretty much a thing of the past. $200 for a minimal obit in the paper... that would be a hard NO. even if those still reading the BS are doing it online. I guess we just have to rely on someone actually calling us! even then, its been 10 months since my father passed and I still run into people who are upset that they 'didn't know'. :( not sure what the alternative would be.

Jan's avatar

I have a loyalty thing at our local coffee shop. Not a chain store. A nice cozy shop run by young people. I refuse the offers too. And only lurk on YouTube and some substacks via Feedly. If Walmart is going to have that level of intrusion, I’ll hope someone invents Faraday Gloves or a Faraday wrap you put on the handle.

Warrior Mom's avatar

I too only do the 'frequent shopper' thing at two independent coffee shops, where I always pay cash (well I do that for 90% of my 'in person' purchases). never, ever do that for chain places.

the Walmart I go to about once every 2 months or so, the carts are so ratty and beat-up, if they ever up-grade to these biotracking things, it will be so obvious. I will start bring my own pull cart or something. besides the data, that more and more exposure to emf's. ugh!

question: what's 'Feely'? is that a browser?

I treat a heckuva lot of Amish. And while I really do love my air conditioner (it's supposed to be between 100-105 for the next several days), they get a lot of things right. A LOT of things... Great post!

BTW, my bro, an MD, is finishing your War Against Chlorine Dioxide. He says it's as good as your previous book on "War".

David Nelson's avatar

Frankly, they probably have ways to "beat the heat" that work well enough. (I'll bet it involves getting comfortable with perspiration again, yet another "artificial enemy" stood up by Big Advertising.)

Jan's avatar

I don’t think spandex is hanging in their closet either (I try to wear loose cotton in the summer heatwaves ) Farms are breezy and cotton is cooler. I was raised on a Midwest farm. Heat was different out there.

David Nelson's avatar

I'm in the upper Midwest where, thanks to all the trees that have been replaced by corn-for-ethanol, the humidity now can rival Houston's. I wear long-sleeve shirts and long-sleeve pants to work in the woods. I usually don't get out there until noon or later--BECAUSE OF SUBSTACK! And I'm drenched almost immediately, to the point of the hardware on my suspenders RUSTING. BUT, over time, I've concluded that THIS was, really, how my parents grew up, and how my grandparents and theirs lived. I just wish I had an outdoor shower. Like on M*A*S*H. With nurses. Well no. Not the nurses. We just don't have the closet space.

Jan's avatar

Yes. Humidity is a feature, not a bug of the Midwest area with mosquitoes along for the ride. . My area is growing solar farms, sadly, but we are blessed with lots of local food. I’ll still take our summers here in the country over any larger urban area. Everywhere just feels so much hotter there and is due to many ways urban spaces operate. I lose part of my soul in them. 😢

David Nelson's avatar

I discovered you can buy a mosquito net that pulls down over your hat. You can still hear their annoying whine, but they bounce off the netting, and your heart does a little dance. (Of course 51% of the time I forget and leave it at the house.)

Jan's avatar

I’ve seen those. That’s why we camp in Wyoming at higher altitudes in summer. Mosquitoes are less a problem. We don’t step foot into the south or East. It’s been a dryer summer and the mosquitoes have not been horrible here within sight of the Cheddar Border in PrickSters blue hell hole. . I stay out of deep wood areas, though, on my hikes. They rise like a whining, voracious cloud in there. I may get one of those hats anyway. Thanks for reminding me.

Dave Schultz's avatar

I took a ride with my BIL a few years back in the summer to pick up furniture in Amish country PA. The furniture was excellent craftsmanship. The man used an elevator in his workshop to bring product to the main floor of the barn/showroom. Elevator was powered by hydraulics, I believe. Orders were placed on site and when the bedroom set was finished you would receive a postcard notifying you that it was ready for pickup.

Oh and to beat the heat they made a swimming pool for the kids out of a round galvanized cow trough, I guess you would call it. Love it!

Fred's avatar

We used those cow troughs too. The looks those cows would give us when they came up for a drink! 🤣

Is this not the literal definition of discrimination? This is discrimination on AI Crack.

Get rid all of your "smart" devices if you can handle the discomfort. Yes, that means all of your Alexa devices, Ring cameras, Nest devices, ovens, refrigerators, and anything that connects back to the cloud.

If you're not using Brave browser yet, I would highly recommend using it and ditching all other browsers to help ensure your privacy and security. Use a VPN on your phones and computers.

It's time to go local and abandon these AI monitored mass surveillance stores. Get to know your local farmers and local businesses, so we can mass decentralize towards building a meaningful future for humanity, not for robots.

If you could detect my heart beat, blood pressure, and pupil dilation size, you would know that you got me all worked up this morning with my morning coffee lol. Thanks for the great post Jenna!

Have a great weekend all you beautiful people out there!

Copernicus's avatar

I was looking at fans recently at a big retailer. One advertised itself as a smart fan. That was enough to be a hard NO for me.

Earlier I was having issues logging into one of my email accounts on Brave. Talking with the email provider, and they wanted to tell me that the issue was my browser. I told *them* that I have been using the browser for years and never had problems until this year. And no, I am not going to use Chrome.

Ugh.

Kaycee's avatar

I have divested myself of everything google, for many many years now.

Fred's avatar

We know we’re being survielled, at least to some extent, but still 😖. Thanks Jenna! (I think). PS, your daughters look just like you - gorgeous! 🙆‍♀️

Kaycee's avatar

oooh yeah, I have no smart device in my house other than the tv, which only use one app on it, otherwise it just lets us watch movies. No ring camera, no smart washer and dryer or any other appliance. Use VPN, have Brave, buy local when I can.

I use my ex wife's rewards card number at kroger and intellius thinks I'm a 54 year old mother of 8 living in Basdrop, LA working as a Unitarian minister while driving a 1972 Gran Torino (I did own one of those 30 years ago). I've been f'ing with the system since the day it came online. Dazzle camouflage is the only security nowadays.

Jan's avatar

I lie about my birthdate. It takes too long to scroll down the years anyhoo.. I’m eternally young.

MS's avatar

Yes, same thing. If you can't maintain your privacy, muddy the waters. My profile is linked to numberous fake birthdays and addresses. 01/01/1950 is the default birthday (if I think I might need to remember my fib) which is why I get a lot of happy birthday emails every Jan-1st and often see senior singles dating ads on my youtube. As the saying goes "If you can't beat them, eff with them".

Warrior Mom's avatar

I also intentionally misspell things in all those BS things, like security questions. you can usually opt-out of the 'profile' stuff but who knows how much good that may do you.

Kaycee's avatar

Ooohhh those are all great ideas. I am going to adopt them from you. Hope you don't mind!

"Thanks to surveillance pricing, corporations don’t just know what you want—they know how badly you want it"

Yes but if the socialist have their way, everything will be decided at the top, by a small collectivist committee appointed by the leader. And the state will set the price from the Board and Office of Government Pricing, not because of demand, but because of fairness. And then send the baker the exact amount of flour to make the exact same number of loaves for every store (regardless of customer volume). And the stores will all have the exact same items: 1 mustard, 1 lunch meat, 1 cheese. Did you want brown mustard? Doesn't matter, the state only makes 1 kind, yellow. Oh the store Is out of bread by 10am? The store manager does not care, he doesn't call another store to see if they have extra. That just means less work for him, he gets "paid" the same no matter how many loaves he sells. So less work for him, he can go home early.

See how nice and fair and equal socialism will be ? There will be 7 exact pay scales. Every level of worker will get the exact same based on ability. It will be equality, equity. Won't it be utopia?

Pastor Mike's avatar

One is bad, the other is a different kind of bad.

David Nelson's avatar

"Desperation pricing", huh?

Seems like our old friend, Gouging, has hired a PR firm...

Steven Bradford's avatar

After reading your article, I was thinking maybe I’d have been better off not knowing about all this. But now it’s too late, and I’m a angry, so I Google searched for non-tracking old style flip phones. You think maybe they’ll get the hint?

Meddling Kid's avatar

I have a drawer-full of old Tracfones. I was born for these times.

TheBlindSquirrel's avatar

The cell towers don't support gen 3 phones anymore.

Fred's avatar

That little “glitch” pried the last flip phone out of our home. 🤬

Kitt Lo's avatar

I've been threatening to activate my 1999 fuschia Motorola for years now. Do you want one of my dad's three jitterbugs? How badly?!😂😂

David Nelson's avatar

Sorry, I'm not going to just "say" how badly. You have to measure me.

Esther Cook's avatar

Use any other search engine instead of google. The best is probably Brave browswer, but you have to have Brave Browser. Get Brave browser. The very best is probably the Russian Yandex, but that has problems, too.

Warrior Mom's avatar

been using Brave for years but I have also heard, (unsure how true) that these alternate browsers still somehow latch onto Google search results

Jpeach's avatar

I’m bagging the new iPhone. Time for a used Jitterbug flip phone. I need to find a VPN located deep in the mountains of West Virginia. No more self checkout. Gotta pay the human cashier in cash. Need to work on my “Happy but Cheap” vibe.

Jan's avatar

I have a faraday bag. Will use it in stores since I rarely access it in stores. At my age, I’m so over actual shopping and don’t crave much anymore. I’m not on their big spender algorithms I’m guessing. But I’m still a warm body walking around with a phone. I’m trying to keep my iPhone 11 going. I keep my old phones and use them maybe as an alarm clock, etc. curiously, My first iPhone was in 2014 and its battery has beat the other SE’s I bought over the years. It’s still going (no SIM card) but it’s my back up camera when scouting painting locations.

JSR's avatar

Can I ask what type of bag are you using?

John Wright's avatar

VPN in from Jamaica. It really flips them out! You'd be amazed how many sites will block your activity if you come from Panama, Jamaica, Costa Rico.

Crixcyon's avatar

Yes...usually anything from another country (outside the US for me) causes connection problems with web sites. I switch it up every day. Mongolia is a good one.

John Wright's avatar

Mongolia is a bit far. Not sure I want that much latency.

Copernicus's avatar

Proton has a free good VPN. The paid version doesn't cost much and offers more connection options.

Heather B's avatar

This is why I'm glad I'm kind of stuck in the past. I do not have apps on my phone at all. My kids hate it but I only use my phone for talking, not texting. The keyboard is too small, dammit. On my laptop I use a VPN which changes locations every few hours. Thanks for writing about it. I'll have to do diligent price shopping now, using 2 laptops instead of just one. Ick. So yeah, I want off this ride. Thanks to all their shenanigans my heart rate is probably too high!

John Wright's avatar

Whoa... you've got me beat if you change your location every few hours! Once a day is enough for me. Damn that weather in Denver is nice today. 😇 And you sure can't beat Jamaica.

Heather B's avatar

I'll take Hawaii over Jamaica every day of the week!

John Wright's avatar

Hmm... I've never tried to VPN from Hawaii!

Flippin’ Jersey's avatar

Gonna be lit when people start messing with the electronic labels in grocery stores. Only a matter of time before someone develops an RFID blocker/projector that enables you to change prices while standing there.

Personally, I’m wearing gloves and taking a beta blocker before food shopping. And I’m carrying a flip phone registered to a PO box in Camden NJ. Gotta get them sweet, sweet low prices!

Thank you Jenna. I love you.

Fred's avatar

Don’t have Instagram. Any way to watch clips without signing up?

John Wright's avatar

Don't most of them originate on TikTok these days? (I don't have TikTok)

Fred's avatar

IDK; don’t have Tik Tok either.

Laura Kasner's avatar

I’m not sure Fred. I thought you could just watch in a browser.

Abuelo Doug's avatar

Sorry Walmart, but after watching all the meltdowns in your stores, my agitation score would be pegged at MAX and totally unusable.

Skenny's avatar

I observed one of the ride-sharing services playing pricing games, and "stand by, we're on the way" games, as I was walking (a few miles) home one day. I deleted their app and kept walking.

Meddling Kid's avatar

They almost got me yesterday with an email for $5 bushwackers at my favorite bbq joint.

“All you have to do is download the app…”

Nope! Hard pass.

Jan's avatar

Same here. I ignore the app schtick now.

Carolyn Singer's avatar

But will my flip phone have access to Substack? And how do I find a phone number to a restaurant if I don’t have Open Table to make a reservation? Do I need an actual phone book? Or do I just show up and hope? And do I now need a MAPSCO to find it? (Bonus points if you know what that is.). My idea for a new reality show: 12 people give up their phones for 2 weeks.

Jenna McCarthy's avatar

Actual LOL! I hate TV and I might watch that! Can you imagine all the things (especially younger) people literally WOULD NOT KNOW HOW TO DO without their phones? I say we let them loose in LA with a Thomas Guide and a few quarters for a pay phone... :)

Jenna McCarthy's avatar

OMG I literally am going to pitch this show! The more I think about it, the more I want to watch it! (Can I nominate my kids as contestants? Hahahahaha.)

Mary Ann Caton's avatar

Greg Gutfeld has a Fox Nation show that puts people in a location for several months without any connection to the outside world. I think it's called "What Did I Miss." Haven't watched it but sounds similar to Carolyn's idea.

Meddling Kid's avatar

I just searched “public pay phone” in Google Maps for the greater LA area.

There are 4, and one is marked as “closed”.

One near Moorpark Home Acres, north of Thousand Oaks

One north of Altadena at the base of a hiking trail

And one INSIDE (so NOT 24/7 access) the Angeles Mesa public library on W 52nd.

The closed one is on N Hacienda in La Puente, but I don’t see it outside so it may be inside and “closed” means the business it’s inside of isn’t open yet today.

Fred's avatar

Threw out my last Thomas guide only a few years ago. 🥺

Dena's avatar

Reminds me of the video of parents who gave their 2 teen sons a rotary phone & 2 minutes to figure out how to use it pretty funny!

Fred's avatar

Have to search MAPSCO. 😢🤣

The Great Resist's avatar

I remember Mapsco! We had moved to Dallas from a smaller town where all the east-west streets were in numerical order and all the north-south streets were in alphabetical order, so you could easily find your way to any address. Once in Dallas, we were trying to navigate using a big fold-out map that showed the entire Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex. (We were young so we could actually read the tiny print back then.) I kept accidentally ending up in neighborhoods I REALLY didn’t want to be in and couldn’t find my way back to the highway. But then someone told us about Mapsco. What a game changer! But crazy expensive. And we had to have two (one for each car), and we had to replace them every couple of years because the suburbs were growing so fast. People used to put their Mapsco coordinates on party invitations to make it easy for their guests. Good times!

Okay I’m inventing a heart rate and temperature scrambling pendant and if you guys want to get in on it now I’ll make you a sweet deal. 💰💰💰 I’m taking suggestions whether you want them to be small and subtle like fashion jewelry or huge- like the giant clocks FlavaFlav used to wear.

I’m on team FlavaFlav! I want to send such a strong message that even the security guy with the seeing-eye dog can’t miss it.

Hubby orders so many connectors and cords for our solar set up on our camper which he is constantly refining. I got to use the microwave this summer in Wyoming off the grid. Wahoo!! All these cords and connectors are grey, black and red. How he knows the difference is way beyond me.
