Ok I HAVE been under a rock. Never heard of this couple until today. Yeah seems like the sentences were harsh relative to manslaughter and no crocodile tears for the gov $ but they also defrauded creditors.

When hubby and I were young and dumb we pre-paid a roofing contractor who made off with our money. After trying to find a lawyer to sue him (they all said legal fees would be higher than the amt of money and collecting a judgement would be next to impossible) one suggested contacting our state AG office. Turns out they had a file on the guy - he had been ripping people off for several years but didn't have the documentation to go after him. I had kept everything, including his business flyer, invoices, written correspondence (we had been faxing, lol, this was the 90's) and so on and we were willing to testify. Was charged with fraud and picked up on cocaine possession charges (our money went up his nose) and was convicted and got 7 years for fraud. So there IS precedent, although I doubt he served all 7 years.

What pisses me off is that this couple's charade was Christianity. When Christians parade about with their faith and then act like jack*sses it gives those who disdain faith an opportunity to say - see! I told you they are all a bunch of charlatans. And of course the full on MAGA show also taints the MAGA movement too. Not sure why Trump would expend political capital on these 2 although I guess he likes trolling the left.

"although I guess he likes trolling the left."

That seems to be explanation enough for me. I do kinda wish he'd do it less, but then again, he's pretty good at it.

When I did real estate, you heard of builders that EVERYONE had to have their house built by. What really happened was they subcontracted it to some sub par contractor and you got a pile of crap with a leaky basement to boot. When people would contact "the builder" and say they are going to sue, his response was "been there, done that, give it your best shot!"

You should be able to tell someone is a Christian by their unspoken actions. My motto is when someone incessantly tells you what a Christian they are, (Mike Pence), grab your wallet and RUN!

A very well regarded builder in our area sold out to a subsidiary of Berkshire Hathaway about a decade ago, but they opted to keep the name. So for many years people continued to buy based on reputation. But now, word on the street is that homes they have built since the ownership change are crap builds with ridiculously high prices. So it's "Summit Homes" in name only. Just as the Christians in name only.

It’s the fake Christian part that really bothers me. But I guess they’re advocates of prosperity gospel teaching. When I saw their faces, before reading any details, I could see they were frauds. Focus on their eyes instead of those toothy smiles.

Yes, our pastor makes frequent reminders that if we are to profess Christianity then we also accept the responsibility to LIVE the gospel. Doesn't mean we don't screw up - even Peter denied Christ 3 times - but the goal is to lead by trying to be a good example. IMHO these prosperity gospel preachers are the equivalent of those junky breakfast cereals - they will fill you up and taste good but aren't really good for you in the long run.

"An upgraded version of:

has been installed."

If you have to HEAR someone tell they are Christian before you can SEE it, probably best not to engage. It has to be said that these fakes can be laid squarely at the feet of Martin Luther who established that anyone can claim authority to speak for God. One man's fake is another man's fakir.

The only people who know why Trump pardoned the Chrisleys are Trump and his team. I’ve been watching as closely as I can and have noticed that Trump doesn’t seem to make many mistakes in this area. Also, his executive order concerning agencies prosecuting criminally for breaking rules is another reason why he has and may continue to pardon for these victimless crimes. Federal prosecutors have become outright evil in their treatment of US citizens. I’m glad something is being done to stop this bullshit.

She was convicted of state criminal charges, not federal charges so, unfortunately, he doesn’t have any Constitutional authority to pardon her. He instructed the DOJ in early May to “take all necessary action” to secure her release but I’m sure Colorado is not cooperating.

I feel like - and act on - we should all turn our backs on everything outrage, walk or run out of the entire rotten corrupt attention grabbing machine and create the world we want to live in. get rid of tv, radio and everything 'smart' start paying attention to the real world, the one outside your car/house/phone find a problem and start solving it.

While I have no idea who the Chrisleys are, I have a few basic rules of thumb:

Anyone that gets above moderately wealthy is guilty of something (heck probably the average person has broken a few laws here and there without even realizing it).

Thus it's best to keep your head down (or hire a bunch of high priced lawyers) because if you tick someone off (or simply represent the "wrong" viewpoint), most likely you'll end up in court at some point or another.

There are advantages to being poor! We only have to deal with the normal crap that life dumps on us.

Keep in mind that a conviction of ten years might really be only serving six months in a "country club" and then out on parole for "good behavior".

I also got a "Hi" from a clearly- not-you Jenna. Last night someone figured out how to be me on Paul Offit's "Beyond the Noise" Substack and said some truly hideous things, using words I would never use, to attack a woman whose child is autistic because of a vaccine.

Expand full comment
Jenna McCarthy's avatar

That is horrifying. I have tried to help other people this has happened to and it is shocking to me that substack has no safeguards in place. In the olden days this was a problem on Amazon for authors because people could make 1000 different accounts and leave crappy reviews of your book, always saying something like “for a great book on the subject, buy XYZ” so you know it was just a competitor. Apparently this account was messaging people about investment opportunities, but it’s clearly a bot as it posted just “hi” on hundreds of comments. That should be a red flag for substack immediately.

I really can't imagine what could the safe-guards be against scammers creating a fake account with misspelled name, other than reactively block such accounts from the system as soon as they become evident, in whatever manner. Which it seems, has taken place already. Sorry it happened to you, Jenna. But tells us, your humbly followers, that we have to look out. And, on a side note, I didn't get the "Hi" email and I'm seriously questioning the reasons for that, my feelings on inadequacy are definitely triggered 😁😁😁 Though, if I did, I'd have asked for the famous red toaster 😉 (If that reference doesn't ring a bell, there's a guy a trolling scammers with requests for a red toaster, made it to TED with his story)

Interesting topic today Jenna. Never heard of them till this. Did they do wrong? Yup! Did they get a raw deal because of their support of Trump? Absolutely! Does Trump love to troll the left the left? Absolutely! Is Lady Liberty peeking from under her blindfold? Does Donald Trump eat at McDonald's? Some egregious examples..

Since we're on support of Trump, the Trump Russian Collusion Delusion disgrace. "86 47 Comey" ADMITTED IN A VIDEO INTERVIEW he lied and framed General Michael Flynn who subsequently lost EVERYTHING! Yet he is still walking around free WITH A BOOK! Rodger Stone would not lie about Trump and he got an O-dark 30 wake up call from the feds WITH CNN CONVENIENTLY THERE TO FILM IT!

Others? The "youngster" who stabbed Austin Metcalf got out on a $250,000 reduced bond. Kyle Rittenhouse, defending his life, was put in a jail cell WITH NO ACCESS TO RUNNING WATER FOR A MONTH, AND HAD TO POST A $2 MILLION CASH BAIL!

Then we have Navy Veteran "Patrick “Tate” Adamiak who "never sold a single real firearm—not one—even though he sold thousands of dollars per month of military gear and gun parts legally on his former website", that the ATF framed and lied that he was selling ACTUAL grenade launchers and machine guns and got 20 YEARS!

Where is this guy's pardon?

Watched an hour or more of Grateful Drag YT clips last night...Yeah, they're fer sure fer real...probably the best GD tribute band I've heard, and although I haven't heard them all, I've heard more than a few...they have a YT channel with tons of individual song clips as well as a couple 2+hour shows they did in Vegas a little over a month ago...most of the clips I watched were straight-ahead 😉 renditions and well done, but their take on Mama Tried is NSFW and maybe not the best idea for pre-teens (although these days, maybe ala Cole Porter, Anything Goes?). I also got the Hi email. Knew it was a scammer. Ugh! I never heard of these people and was a bit surprised that Trump pardoned them. It seems too obvious as to why and it's not good optics. The justice system is surely not fair to many people, but it's better than most countries.

I really dislike all reality shows as they are a waste of time IMHO. Jenna's take on this particular couple seems spot on and quite amusing. These people needed a consequence of sorts, although 7 and 12 years seems harsh.
