I already know one of my relatives belonged to a gang and broke a member out of the clink in Virginia in the early 1900s. Some landed gentry man in Britain had enough money to wear one of those fancy ruff collars around his neck (according to the portrait on line) and no doubt kicked his servants around until the rest of the later family got on a tub and ended up here—sans the money.
