"If you’re wearing the flag and the words “Team USA,” you represent America. Not “America except the parts you don’t like.” Not “America, kinda.” Just… America. That’s the job." This is the gold in this article. Sick of people who have benefitted from everything the US offers and then shit on it.
Agree! Give me give me give me and make it MORE! Americans have no idea how good they have it and how they live off the sweat and labor of their ancestors. A new high school program should require time spent in other places in the world where they could evaluate what freedom and liberty really mean instead of whining they want more or subjecting us all to their opinion while prepping for the circus. And oh Mariah Carey; what a bore and a mistake: frozen in Cortina! The Italians just couldn't find someone of their own to open the games. A screen showing us Pavarotti would have been more satisfying but I digress!
Also Gold: “The entire premise of the Games is representing your nation, not holding a public referendum on your personal mood or the state of diplomatic drama. If you’re wearing the flag and the words “Team USA,” you represent America”. But the USOC won’t enforce that.
Its not the USOC who should be enforcing it. Its the coaches.
This is one of those situations that calls for a group sit down early on when the teams are formed where it is made clear that they are a team, a team who will represent the Unites States. Everything that they say and do will reflect on their team and on the country.
They are there to represent the best of their sport and to test those skills against the best from around the world, not to expound on their personal political views and ruminations on what they don’t like or approve of. If they can't either a) respond positively when asked if they are proud to represent the country, period, full stop, or b) keep their negarive political navel gazing and world opinions to themselves, let us know now. Do not be a self-righteous hypocrite and agree to represent this country and then refuse to recognize what an honor it truly is when there are alternate athletes who would be genuinely grateful for the opportunity to wear the uniform and represent the United States.
This is what happens when you raise generations of kids to think that they are special, the world revolves around them, and that their feelings are the most important thing in the world. Sorry, but the only thing special about them is that they are really good at a particular event, the world not only doesn't revolve around them, it barely knows that they even exist, and the only people in the world who care about their feelings is them and their mommy.
Agreed. Surely these althetes sign an agreement saying they have to “dance with the one who brung ‘em”. The first athlete who comments with the tiniest whiff of not proudly representing whatever country they represent should immediately be replaced with the country’s alternate competitor (who has practiced exactly as long and hard as the ambivalent athlete). I suspect that would quell the appetite for making news for reasons other than winning medals.
And...Cat, you win the gold medal today in the comments. Americans are so blessed. I believe if they are SO serious about how much America sucks, we buy their ticket to the DNC or Senegal. They can stay there. Forever. Maybe even send them to North Korea, because nothing screams "Dictator" like a real dictator...not the one you think is a facist yet you live in this nation and open your big mouth to complain. Anywhere else? Yeah, please go there and keep complaining. Check back with us in a year.
I'm here in Mexico with friends who are applying for permanent citizenship, and cannot fathom the disconnect when they start ranting about ICE. Hello????? Why should we be the only country in the world who doesn't enforce our borders? And yes, every student should spend their first year after high school in either a third world country where every drop of water is hours of work, or a dictatorship where they can see how well they really have it.
Amen. I also believe that after high school kids should have mandatory morgue duty. So they can be close to death, like our ancestors had to be. Or donate some time in a hospice program.
Are you saying your friends who are applying for citizenship are the ones ranting about ICE? Have they known anyone unjustly deported? Meaning a long time undocumented person without any other crimes committed? Thank you.im curious...
Yesterday,I asked that same question to someone( on ND) bragging about their kids participating in “protests “ with signs, and, skipping school with many of the teachers participating. The videos posted looked more like a big party than any kind of serious civics lesson… I only received the “what the heck does THAT matter “comments. I asked had any of these kids experienced a schoolmate, neighbor, or,friend ,deported? What REALLY bothered me was the GRADE school kids put out with signs to “honk if you hate ICE”, and told to boo at any car that didn’t honk…just, wow! Sigh…
I can’t find it but a neighborhood in Minnesota where ICE has had a presence for days has formed (wait for it) a barricade (you know, like a WALL) in the middle of an intersection where they are stopping cars, making sure that anyone going in is actually from that neighborhood and on their side. They’re so proud of themselves and fully committed to the idea that if you aren’t part of their clan…
I can’t even find words to describe the complete idiocy and irony.
hahaha, I live in St. Paul and know of what you speak. Luckily, the local police were empowered to dismantle the blocks and haul it all away in garbage trucks. My favorite part was the soy boy whining, "hey man, that's not your chair".
I'm with you -- to the point of stopping right here. The great American freedom is that you are free to get the f out if you want! Oh, and Jenna... if you wanna write it, I wanna read it ;) Let's hear your take.
After the Masked Olympics, followed by the Transgender Olympics in 2024 and now the Bad Bunny halftime last night, and the Stolen Land Grammies last week, I am pretty much done with celebrities doing anything in public. Junior high basketball, though, is looking pretty good now.
It's got to the point where even the songs they sing and the movies they act in aren't any good either. They turn out songs you can't sing along with and movies that are unwatchable.
I’m not sure her criteria but those probably weren’t on her menu. I rarely watch any movies anymore, even on prime or Netflix. I like mysteries and police procedures series. British mostly. 🤷🏼♀️. Archaeology documentaries, (The Dig was an all time drama movie favorite. Food shows. Medical dramas @nd such.
We have a very large dvd/bluray collection and watch old movies. Movies from when they were funny, exciting, adventurous, original. There's nothing being made like that today.
It doesn’t hurt that the male lead is the best looking ginger of all time. The countryside is almost a character in itself, the acting is stellar. Even the coyote is amazing.
Perhaps there should be a clause in the agreement “our” “athletes” sign that requires a loyalty oath, the violation of which subjects the violator to be stripped of all USA provided merch - their gear, their clothes, and most importantly their citizenship, maybe on the tarmac for the flight they aren’t taking home. “We hereby unburden you from what has been. Good luck in the future, maybe see you in four years.”
Exactly. Like any other country would. Be Japanese and disrespect Japan. You won’t be coming home. Do it in Russia. You will be coming home in a box. Do it in America, meh.
Someone (or some meme?) brought up the fact that if the Obama’s truly thought the coastline would be under 6’ of water, why did they rush out and buy a waterfront home in Martha’s Vineyard?
It's so hard to care about something that has become a political stage for some. And then you have the first person to win a gold this year for America who was so grateful, so amazed and so happy to just be there. That's the amazing part of the Olympics. And why I will continue to watch coverage. Just not the actual games.
Once again, athletes, like celebrities or MSM pundits, decide we give a flying f-ck what they think. How about this? STFU and perform. Talk about your silly sacrifices for sports fame (if you win a medal of course) and mom and dad and then go home and enjoy the accolades. Otherwise, your monomania makes you the least qualified person on the planet to talk about anything other than your sport.
Yep end NATO and get out of the UN which maybe would bring us unity at the Olympics, like include all countries for a change instead of political posturing!
Reaching over piles of rubbish from adulting to type this.. "probably the ones who thought curling involved dumbbells and were only tuning in hoping to see a wardrobe malfunction during the halftime show."
Bless you so so much. I needed that laugh so badly.
The Olympics is still a performance of the best in each sport. It is the pure definition of excellence.
The problem is that these children have been brainwashed and indoctrinated to literally “hate” the USA. They are “proud “ to represent our great country right up until they get a microphone and a platform to spew the shite filled indoctrinated nonsense some moron taught them in HS and or college.
So, who cares to watch them? Not me!
I was a diehard fan my whole life of the Olympics. I can literally remember Nadia Comaneci earning a perfect 10 at the 1976 Montreal Olympics. How about Bruce (Caitlin!?) Jenner setting a new world record in the decathlon in the same Olympics. I was present at those Olympics in 1976! The energy was fantastic and exhilarating! Not my country winning, but I loved the pure excellence of these extraordinary athletes! No bullshit nonsense coming from these athletes. They attended to compete for gold, silver or bronze and they were proud to represent their home country. Period.
I remember Elvis Stoiko (sic) being the first to do a quadruple whatever the heck jump that was.
Not a graceful guy but a great jumper?
Small wonder that skater is propping up the KGBTQ thing: Elvis was probably the ONLY straight male in that entire figure skating Team.
These days: Find me one straight male figure skater. (Unless it's a male pairs skater married to his female partner.)
I don't watch sports but my 93 year old mum is OBSESSED with figure skating so I see it with her from time to time.
Just had to spew that Kat.
And good for you, for escaping Canuckistan when you did.
PS: I totally remember Nadia too. I had just turned 18 years old & had dropped into my parent's town en route to wherever I was bound, that summer of the 1976 Montreal Olympics. It might even have been my "birthday lunch"?
Their eyeballs were glued to the old TV set (with tinfoil wrapped rabbit ears) while we ate that lunch.
Did my dad drag the TV set into the kitchen?? That's what I remember!!
"Scattered pictures..."
Of
"Memories. Like the corners of my mind. Misty water colored Memories..." 😂
And 50 years later some dedicated athlete that trained like mad gets asked some inane question about representing USA and he will be remembered for his political response instead of his athletic performance. Journalism. Gotcha. Clicks. Rage. What a sorry, yellow rag thing to do.
When the leaders of the free world are doing their part to depopulate the earth, the Olympics are the perfect distraction to keep their plan moving forward.
In the end of all the hub ub...the Olympics is about athletes striving for excellence and most do want to represent their country while doing that. In a world that has a lot of crazy, people want the opportunity of going after noble goals and pursuits of excellence. Sports is a human equalizer ...in order to achieve excellence, you have to sacrifice, do the work. It is about meaningful determination to be the best you can, pushing your limits. Jenna...since you never tried sports, you can't understand what that feels like. I have never had Olympic talent...but I have run a marathon and know what it took to train for one. I learned a lot about my self. And I can relate to what these athletes are striving for. Personal excellence and offering that work to represent their country.
Let's take a moment too to remember the athletes who trained--hard--to MAKE the Olympic teams, and didn't. "What now?" "Give up?" "Press on?" If I could find them I'd shake their hand and tell them thank you for reaching for the stars--your dedication is noticed, by some one.
Agree! Without the athletes who pushed the competition toward excellence, our Team USA would not be the caliber it is. Kudos to all who tossed their heart into that arena.
Based on what I saw yesterday, I don't know what the NFL learned. (Closed captions might have helped.)
Based on what I saw yesterday, I did learn that Anheuser-Busch still has its head in the sand. (They don't seem to realize that every one of their expensive ads is a trigger-reminder to me to look past their products. It's like me watching ads for feminine products, and pharmaceuticals with names like "AsFIXia!" and "HerniASE!", which immediately cause me to make mental notes to concentrate hard on not buying them, even by accident.)
That's as good an example as any as it is yet-another dumb thumb-in-the-eye PRETENSE that "no apology is necessary" and that "given enough time our customers will forget about it and come back 'home.'"
I don't think that former Bud Lite customers are falling for any of it, but the more money they spend, the more satisfaction boycotting delivers.
I never drink the stuff. But I grew up with the commercials. It’s a tradition. So I guess it was apology enough to not only return to tradition (even including the dog) but to make it explicitly patriotic.
They've tried "patriotic" before. This is just more-of-the-same that doesn't work. Maybe they're just waiting for all the old customers to die so they don't have to embarrass themselves with an apology. As I say, I love to see them spending the money on the ads.
The cross-dressing dude from that marketing disaster keeps surfacing from the muck in which he is mired on social media. I can’t figure it out. He is a caricature. Nothing more.
I liked the ad, but it didn't make me want to go out and buy their products. I stopped several years ago and wont go back simply because they had a good ad company.
I would’ve appreciated subtitles, but then again, maybe not. It seemed to tell a wholesome family story with the wedding and family attending and all. A very nice change of focus.
I just want to see competition and excellence. A high jump with perfect form. A javelin that flys with no wobble. A gymnast that sticks the landing after doing a trick no one ever had previously done without falling.
What I DON’T want (and this includes YOU, American Idol, America’s Got Talent, and every sport filling time) is backstory. I couldn’t care less how this kid grew up mildly poor or this one fought crippling fear of grape juice.
If you have time to put in filler, you have time to cover a different event. There are literally dozens of events going on simultaneously at an Olympics, you don’t need to fluff minutes of action into hours of boredom. That’s why we already have baseball.
Lest I confuse you, I was a very young Canadian teenager in 1976. I have been a proud naturalized USA citizen for 21 years and living here for over 30 years. Yes, I am a legal immigrant!
I did not read your whole article, because I could not care less - if it had not been on the news page of the one paper I read, I would not have known there were games going right now.
I think skis were invented in the mountains, so people could get down easily (do not ask me how they got up again LOL)
For the rest, who cares about 22 adults running behind a ball and shout goal when one gets it in the net. I watched cycling because of the landscapes. I watched snooker because that looked quite tricky (and some players indeed performed tricks in between matches). What I liked to watch were shepherd dogs herding sheep. That, to me, is real sport!
The Westminster Dog Show was worth every minute: no matching costumes, no politics, no "We hate America," and I'm pretty sure the dogs didn't know they either won or lost!
"If you’re wearing the flag and the words “Team USA,” you represent America. Not “America except the parts you don’t like.” Not “America, kinda.” Just… America. That’s the job." This is the gold in this article. Sick of people who have benefitted from everything the US offers and then shit on it.
If you don’t want to represent America, don’t go. Or move. Those are pretty much your options…and, well, even Ellen moved back. So.
Damn, Ellen is back? I thought we'd gotten rid of her. I guess she'd rather live under Hitler than Stalin.
Wish Ellen would have stayed away.
Agree! Give me give me give me and make it MORE! Americans have no idea how good they have it and how they live off the sweat and labor of their ancestors. You are right about Carey, but they did also have Cecilia Bartoli [sp?] and Andrea Bocelli [sp?]
Bocelli was moving, as always.
I stand corrected - thank you. After Mariah, I turned it off.
Yes like Bocelli.
Also Gold: “The entire premise of the Games is representing your nation, not holding a public referendum on your personal mood or the state of diplomatic drama. If you’re wearing the flag and the words “Team USA,” you represent America”. But the USOC won’t enforce that.

Yes, that is exactly what I am saying, and no, they don't know anyone personally deported.
Yesterday,I asked that same question to someone( on ND) bragging about their kids participating in “protests “ with signs, and, skipping school with many of the teachers participating. The only public thing I want celebrities to do is get on a plane or space ship and leave the country or earth. I’m so over all of them.
It's got to the point where even the songs they sing and the movies they act in aren't any good either. They turn out songs you can't sing along with and movies that are unwatchable.
My movie loving friend who used to enjoy going out to one, bemoans the fact that there are very few she wants to see anymore.
True. One Battle after Another was excellent though. And Zootopia 2, haha. And the film of Hamilton.
I’m not sure her criteria but those probably weren’t on her menu. I rarely watch any movies anymore, even on prime or Netflix. I like mysteries and police procedures series. British mostly. 🤷🏼♀️. OUTLANDERS has been terrific.
It doesn’t hurt that the male lead is the best looking ginger of all time. The countryside is almost a character in itself, the acting is stellar. Even the coyote is amazing.
I will add the movies I Can Only Imagine 1 (not new) and 2 (new)–about the Christian group Mercy Me.
Me too! As in nothing I want to see movie-wise anymore.
I’m still mourning the fact that they didn’t push Katy Perry out the window for the 2.4 seconds she was playing astronaut.
For the so-called “celebrities, shut up & sing / act / play ball. No one gives a shit about your ill-informed, uneducated opinions
👏👏👏
Emphasis on "Bad.". And not Michael Jackson "bad" either.
I agree with you Mary Ann!
😁
Perhaps there should be a clause in the agreement “our” “athletes” sign that requires a loyalty oath, the violation of which subjects the violator to be stripped of all USA provided merch - their gear, their clothes, and most importantly their citizenship, maybe on the tarmac for the flight they aren’t taking home. “We hereby unburden you from what has been. We haven’t lived in a Serious Country in a long time…
Lovely cackling kamala ref there 🤣🇨🇦
TY. You’re the first to comment on it.
According to Al Gore there was supposed to be no snow or ice anywhere on the planet by now. He won a lot of gold medals for predicting that.
We, out here in north west Pennsylvania haven't seen the actual ground since November. Take THAT, Mr. Gore.
Here in upstate New York as well. Agree with Cat Thompson. Some of the people have no idea how good they have it.
Good point. Lol. He’s still frothing at the mouth in one of his seaside homes, isn’t he? Like the Obamas for other reasons.
Someone (or some meme?) brought up the fact that if the Obama’s truly thought the coastline would be under 6’ of water, why did they rush out and buy a waterfront home in Martha’s Vineyard?
I think all Al’s medals have turned out to be fool’s gold. Or at least I hope so.
It's so hard to care about something that has become a political stage for some. And then you have the first person to win a gold this year for America who was so grateful, so amazed and so happy to just be there. That's the amazing part of the Olympics. The back stories are my favorite parts of the games.
Once again, athletes, like celebrities or MSM pundits, decide we give a flying f-ck what they think. How about this? STFU and perform. "The NYT insists the Games are overshadowed by climate death, the disintegration of NATO, and ICE agents in Milan."
I don't care enough to watch the games, but I'd be willing to if that would assure the end of NATO.
Yep end NATO and get out of the UN which maybe would bring us unity at the Olympics, like include all countries for a change instead of political posturing!
💯
ICE agents? Why would US immigration enforcement agents be in Italy? Make it make sense.
Alex, I'll take "ships that have sailed" for $500.
What jock opera? Please say?
Reaching over piles of rubbish from adulting to type this.. "probably the ones who thought curling involved dumbbells and were only tuning in hoping to see a wardrobe malfunction during the halftime show."

Classic Jenna! This is why I subscribe. A good humorous view of an international event (that doesn't involve humans shooting each other).
When the leaders of the free world are doing their part to depopulate the earth, the Olympics are the perfect distraction to keep their plan moving forward.
Boom! You nailed it. Distractions and deflections.
OK now, that's priceless

Sports and politics don’t mix. Never did and never will. The NFL found out with their SB halftime show.

I call them the Clydesdale commercials. I refuse to give a nod to the brewery.
The Budweiser Clydesdale and Eagle commercial is AWESOME!! Makes me wish I liked beer.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Total number of viewers of TPUSA halftime show: 25 million. 😁
And no commercials!
We unfortunately watched it on YouTube. YouTube actually interrupted one of the songs with one of their commercials we couldn't click out of!
Idk, I have adult kids, all conservative, and they all watched and enjoyed the halftime show. I think I just don’t like popular music anymore.
One writer said the Bad Bunny halftime performance was a humiliation ritual. I agree.
I would’ve appreciated subtitles, but then again, maybe not. It seemed to tell a wholesome family story with the wedding and family attending and all. A very nice change of focus.
Btw. I do frequently wish I had remembered my three years of high school Spanish. 😏

I think that's what all the goats were for.
Oh David you made my day LOL
The Westminster Dog Show was worth every minute: no matching costumes, no politics, no "We hate America," and I'm pretty sure the dogs didn't know they either won or lost!
