Voted unsure;

Kimmel is not a comic.

He won't apologize.

Suspension boosts ratings.

He cannot be deported.

The best way, is to never watch.

He's entitled to his opinion.

No one is compelled to care...

I'll take the pledge: "I will not participate in learning anything more about him or his antics beyond what I already know. I will let him rest in peace."

AFistFullOfGizzards's avatar

I took that view with Boris Johnson. It has served me well.. Though of course im looking forward to a trial, if it ever comes.

Janet's avatar

Don’t care. Don’t watch.

Abuelo Doug's avatar

Actually, I voted likewise, and wish "the man's a comic" wasn't part of that answer.

The job description for Late Night Talk Show Host changed over the last 10 - 15 years. If "be funny" is still in it, it's at the bottom, moved from under "Required," to now, "Nice to Have."

AMZNGRZ's avatar

Totally! Me too. What is the worst that could happen to him? Ignore him!

Meddling Kid's avatar

Sadly, Jimmy’s actual stats show that he should have been replaced long ago, but because the talent pool on the left is so shallow, he represents the best of the best for them, so they run with it.

Heather B's avatar

Can't stand Jimmy Kimmel but just let him speak and ruin his own reputation; I'm fine with it. On the other hand, the first amendment does not allow calls to violence on someone so I think Comey's post went a bit too far. JMO.

Marlene Swann's avatar

I confess I did think it was a stretch for the DOJ to indict on “threats to the president” over 4 numbers written in shells. Did he have malicious intent? Of course he did. Was he also promoting his new book? Again, yes. Was it in really really bad taste? Undeniably. Am I glad he’s getting trounced? Again, a resounding yes. So, if all that comes of this is he has to use his pocketbook to overturn a frivolous lawsuit like Trump had to do for 10 years, I’m ok with that.

Maureen's avatar

It’s a little more than just the seashells. Based on his following and his book, they are going to try to make the case for incitement to violence. And even if they don’t do it well, they are not opposed to just engaging in lawfare, like what was done to Trump. What’s good for the goose is good for the gander.

Marlene Swann's avatar

It’s a good thing you’re my sister. I was really gonna come at ya, bro! Ha ha JK my sister!

Meddling Kid's avatar

The lawfare is definitely justified, and even though the charge is weak, if it enables DOJ to probe deeper for more charges or gives leverage for him to flip on bigger fish, game on.

Marlene Swann's avatar

Exactly. Game on.

Yes, let Kimmel speak as he continues to shoot himself (metaphorically, of course) in the foot, then reloads. Eventually, his feet will become so "loaded" he won't be able to get up.

Kimmel is not funny. I think the Comey arrest will be about more than sea shells, according to some trusted sources. He is indeed a "dirty cop."

Ginny Moore's avatar

This one is extra bad ass. I stand with you on free speech. 🙌🤬🍑😘

Flippin’ Jersey's avatar

This is a case of Trump trolling himself. Ignoring Kimmel is what he should do. Let him say whatever he wants and just pretend it never happened. If anyone asks, just say, “Didn’t see it…and neither did anyone else. Next question.”

David Baldwin's avatar

Best reaction we should all have: " Didn't see it.... " Once his audience dwindles and the advertisers pull their ads, eventually he'll be gone. Until then, not giving him an iota of coverage is the best course of action.

LOVE that quote!

Coincidence or not, Kimmel has built up quite a track record of attempting to make jokes about death which are not funny. Kimmel should be fired on the grounds of incompetence. He isn't entertaining.

It's not censorship, it's being fired for incompetence. Once or twice you get excused for a poor joke, but this is getting absurd. Is it Kimmel writing these or just delivering them? Perhaps Kimmel's writers should be replaced?

🤦‍♂️ Okay, then fire his wife.

Jenna , you aren’t defending him. You are defending the First Amendment. Bravo !

But you said it yourself … “ … for saying something they don’t like; it does not promise you there won’t be societal, financial, or professional consequences…”

And the backlash is the consequences. 🤷🏼‍♀️ If he has a right to say disgusting things, everybody else has a right to demand he be removed from the air. It’s a consequence.

Juju's avatar

Stochastic terrorism is a real thing. Look it up. The way to fight it is not to infringe on free speech, but to have a public backlash so severe that people won’t even engage with it. To shame or criticize that backlash when it happens only prolongs how long we have to live with the terrorism.

Richard schoenenberger's avatar

The great Rush Limbaugh defended the first amendment till the day he died.

Juju's avatar

The consequences are separate from the first amendment. He has a right to say whatever he wants, and we have a right to respond however we want. See how that works?

Tim Pallies's avatar

I think we'd all be much better off focussing on the relevant principles involved in a situation, with much less emphasis on the people involved. That's my long-winded way of saying I agree with you 100% on this one.

Daryce Morris's avatar

I chose the first one but saying he’s a comic is a stretch

Marcia Beauchamp's avatar

I agree about Kimmel, and the late night comedian market will eventually adjudicate, one way or the other. Comey, I’m not so sure. Coming from an apparent not-comedian, top of the food-chain law enforcement official, an actual *kill him* post seems a lot more over-the-top and almost rises to yelling fire in a full auditorium, IMO.

Sheila's avatar

Sure I'd love to see a jackass like him deported... but seriously, how about if we just stop giving him so much attention??! Sometimes planned ignoring really is the best consequence for crass behavior.

Jay Erwin's avatar

Can't deport him, because our country doesn't have a deportation treaty with Dumbassistan.

Meddling Kid's avatar

I would settle for having him air-dropped onto that island in the middle of the South Pacific where everyone thinks he’s hilarious.

It doesn’t exist? Oh, then just drop him with a raft where it should be and let him build it back better.

Patti F's avatar

The term "86" means "to take out", "nix", or "remove". It comes from an old mafia term meaning 8 miles away, 6 feet under. Posting "8647" means literally to take out the President. Calling for the death of a President is punishable by federal law. Comparing that to Kimmel's tasteless comments (the man is causing ABC/Disney to hemorrhage money yet they refuse to fire him) is not even remotely the same.

Jenna McCarthy's avatar

That is actually hotly debated. Most folks agree it comes from restaurant slang, where 86 meant to cancel (an item is sold out) or refuse service (kick a customer out). It's basically no different than "no kings." It's "we want him gone." NO SHIT. (Sorry but come on!) Again, it's the slippery slope that I'm scared of, because freedom of speech is at the top for a reason...

Come on folks. Only 28% chose option one "Jeez the man's a comic" It should be 100%. Like Jenna said, You WILL have the keys to the "opposition" car one day and want to say distasteful things about a Dem, like we often do. As the saying goes, "what's good for the goose is good for the gander". You never know which one you'll be.

🌱Nard🙏's avatar

That was my vote. He’s a comedian…a really bad one.

Richard schoenenberger's avatar

He has let hatred take control

arrotsevni's avatar

The environment of death threats entered Kimmel's lack of humor. I find him profoundly stupid for mindlessly using current social media trending commentary for his shtick and thinking himself it is funny.

arrotsevni's avatar

You were spot-on to see his commentary as you did! Some stuff is simply part of the current milieu and no more. Critical thinking at its best!
