From my readings on child abuse, a lot of these people ARE incapable of normal adult secure attachment. Some are severely damaged and hate themselves and feel incapable of love. Yes they feel VERY lonely. Instead, they seek attention of children who are incapable of rejecting them or saying no. Also they may themselves feel defiled and wish to "spoil" the innocent child so that the child can not have what they want. A psychoanalytic paper I once read stated that a lot of child abuse stems from envy.
