Atrazine has been found, repeatedly, to disrupt endocrine factors in sex determination of animals. Then there’s all the birth control flushed into our water as well. The list goes on PFAS, etc. Most people think water treatment takes *all* the uglies out of the water, but they generally only care about eliminating things like E.coli. Chlorination kills bad germs (mostly), but does absolutely nothing to endocrine disrupters and other chemical contaminants. Most water treatment facilities don’t even *test* for most chemical contaminants despite knowledge of how prevalent they are. Even the ones they do test for have somewhat arbitrary limits put on them without firm establishment of how much is too much. Even your in-home water filtration is usually aimed at making the taste better but not catching significant contaminants. Reverse osmosis does the most to eliminate contaminants but it’s expensive, so most people just have the flavor filters, but think the filters are actually presenting them with clean water. Despite working in the micro lab, testing well water for bacterial contaminants, & having a background in biomedical sciences, I just found that my water filter basically just removes some of the chlorine taste/smell while leaving everything else in the water. I’m going to buy the middle-of-the-road activated carbon filtration system for my drinking water because I can’t afford the RO system.
You're absolutely right about water systems. They clarify it (remove suspended solids), chlorinate, fluoridate (a neurotoxin) and adjust the pH. Every thing else stays in the water. I've got an Alexapure - similar to a Berkey, but maybe better since it doesn't require a separate filter for fluoride. The third-party test results are available on their website, and they're pretty impressive. I absolutely will not drink the tap water here in Iowa because of all the farm chemicals.
