POTUS got a little help from SCOTUS on mail-in voting this week, and you need a Ph.D. in knot theory to untangle what actually went down.
“The U.S. Supreme Court on Monday lifted one court order blocking President Donald Trump’s administration from implementing an executive order restricting the use of mail-in ballots ahead of the November midterm elections,” Reuters reported.
It’s the triple negative that got me.
Let’s reverse-engineer this thing:
Trump: “We need to tighten the rules around mail-in ballots.” [Restrict.]
Twenty-three mostly blue states plus D.C. choking on their Bud Light: “YOU CAN’T DO THAT!” [Sue.]
Federal Judge: “They’re right.” [Block.]
Trump: “I haven’t even done anything yet!” [Shrug.]
SCOTUS: “Hahaha, actually, you’re right. They sued too soon. You win—for now.” [Lift.]
What the lift does is clear one legal obstacle from the Trump administration’s path as it tries to rope the United States Postal Service into the mail-in voting circus. If the plan survives the remaining hurdles, the Post Office would no longer merely deliver ballots. It would become an actual checkpoint in the whole messy mail-ballot chain of custody.
And Democrats, as you might be aware, are deathly allergic to chain of custody.
MS NOW called the SCOTUS ruling a “shocking voter suppression win.” New York Attorney General Letitia James went with “painful setback.” In a dissenting opinion, Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson insisted that the injunction “needlessly injects chaos and uncertainty into the upcoming midterm elections.” Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro condemned Trump’s “illegal attempt to restrict mail-in voting.”
The democracy-threatening issue, it turns out, is so sinister that Amazon has been doing it to your packages for years.
