It's the people in charge that are the danger. Not as well known as the Terminator movies, but the general idea is humans trusting robots entirely too much and paying dearly when they get out of control. The premise of Runaway is that there is an evil human agent programming the out-of-control robots, which actually seems more likely to me. If the global power players really want to get of most of us, it would be very convenient for them to blame it on the AI. Same outcome, and how would we know?
