While they might not have agreed on many other ideas, they all said democracies die because of the uneducated electorate. So, why not require a test - or the same requirements as to become a citizen, which also means to be of good character so felons should not be allowed to vote either.

Why should a bunch of renters be able to vote for an increase in my property tax for example. Does the average voter know the difference between a revenue and a general obligation bond when a funding measure is on the ballot? We need a basic civic competency test, I mean basic. Pass it, get your voter card and cast your vote. Dare to dream.
Part of what the jury is having problems with might be this: One of the side effects of several of the drugs she was taking is creating homicidal tendencies - while taking the drugs or trying to taper off from them. This is well known and documented, and they should never be prescribed to anyone for any reason. IMO, her doctors and pHARMa should be on trial with her.

I have to ask, because nothing I've seen or read so far has addressed this question directly about her on the night of the killings. And maybe I just missed it. That question is: was she having a psychotic break at the time she killed her children? In a psychotic break the person loses touch with reality. If she was in that state, would she know what she was doing? And that should be factored into this trial. Then there would be the next, admittedly sticky question: if proven she was in that state what happens to her? I'm going to admit right here that, were I on that jury, I'd want that question answered before rendering a verdict. And that's not simple empathy. It's looking at the totality of what happened and whether the trial had done a good enough job of addressing it. Killing your children is something so repugnant most of us don't want to look at it too deeply. I know I don't. But that shouldn't mean an automatic guilty verdict without looking at the total picture of what she was dealing with. Perhaps that's what is really behind the jury's hesitation.
As I said, I haven't seen or read much about the evidence, the transcript, etc. But I do have questions. Maybe the day will come when we can see all of the testimony. Until then I'm still unsure about her mental state and whether she was truly experiencing a psychotic break. Mind you, I haven't made the leap to that. But I can't discount it either with the information available to me.

I am sure any case we get is not newsworthy here in my county, and for the rare criminal trial, they would release me once they find out my husband is a cop. I will grant that most women are too emotional (not me), but men have their issues too. Most serial killers are men. Most pedophiles are men. While most of us just wonder what could be taking so long when she actually did kill her children, people who spend way too much of their time on the internet, not surprisingly, go way too far in their judgements about those doing the job. Maybe, just maybe, the REAL problem is a press that spends literal HOURS every day second guessing everything about this one, relatively unimportant trial. While it’s heart rending that three children are dead at the hands of their mother, we should be at least as concerned that multiple doctors found it necessary to prescribe to her enough mind altering drugs to kill a herd of elephants. Our medical profession is a total and complete balls up mess that, in this woman’s case, altered her perceptions so much that this horrible thing happened. Before anyone goes overboard, she did it, she said she did it and she should have to bear the consequences. But what should also happen is that each and every one of these doctors should at the very least have their licenses to practice suspended or revoked and have to spend their own time and money getting retrained. It’s a travesty all the way around, but simply adjudicating this woman isn’t nearly enough for real justice to take place.

But if we did, it doesn’t go far enough. We also need to remove voting from:
Men under 30 (or 40, I’m easy)
Men who are on any form of public assistance
Men who have felony records
Men using any form of SSRI
Men who don’t have residency of at least 5 years
